Prairie
Schooner Detours
Irene Paden
Two of the worst wagon roads of the West were the Hastings Cutoff and the
Applegate-Lassen. The former cut across the salt deserts of Utah and led the Donners to
their deaths. The latter was a 200-mile boondoggle conceived by Peter Lassen to get
emigrants to his California rancho. Irene Paden, author of Wake of the Prairie Schooner,
describes these two trails in detail, as well as the Sublette and Hudspeth Cutoffs.
