Scharr, one of Americas pioneer women pilots, was among the first to be called to
was among the first to be called to the military's airplane ferrying service
in World War II. This service was comprised of female pilots who transported
empty planes to various airbase destinations, freeing up their male
counter-parts for duty in the desperately understaffed combat pilots
service.
. In the 1980s she produced a massive two-volume set about
her experiences flying everything from Piper Cubs to the deadly Bell Airacobra. The second
volume concerns her adventures in the Womens Airforce Service Pilots (WASP)
organization. Leather-bound versions of each volume are available for $100 each.
